ATLANTA,
Ga. (Sept. 24) -
Lavante Page set a new school record as he rushed for five
touchdowns, helping the Florida A&M Rattlers pull out a 38-33 win over
Southwestern Athletic Conference member Southern University, here Saturday
afternoon in the Bank of America Atlanta Football Classic at the Georgia Dome.
Page,
finished the game rushing for 73 yards on 16 carries, earning AFC Most Valuable
Player honors. He becomes the first Rattlers in school history to score
five touchdowns in one game. The previous record was four TDs in a game,
which was initially held by Willie Galimore. Galimore, scored four TDs against Tennessee State in 1956,
Chuck Duffey duplicated the feat, scoring four against Tuskegee in 1991 and
Otemann Sampson matched it as well,
scoring four against Tuskegee in 1996.
"It was
probably middle school the last time I scored five touchdowns. I went to
Forest Park Middle School right down the street. I'm happy with the five
touchdowns, but I'm more happy just with the win. In the third quarter
guys were kind of dropping their heads and I said, if it's going to be a
shootout, then we'll have to shoot it out," Page said.
The Jaguars
scored on their first possession of the game as Sylvester Nzekwe scored on a
one-yard run with 13:43 to go in the first. FAMU came back down the field and scored on a Trevor Scott
23-yard field goal to cut SU's lead to 7-3. The Rattlers would go up 10-7 as Page scored his first TD of
the game on a two-yard run with 52 second left in the first, capping a 12-play,
84-yard drive, that took 6:15 off the clock.
SU would
take a 13-10 lead as Michael Berry scored on 56-yard TD reception from Dray
Joseph with 11:12 to go in the second quarter. Matthew Hill would miss
the PAT.
An Anthony
Shutt 48-yard interception return would set up Page's second TD of the game as
he scored from 13 yards out, giving FAMU a 17-13 lead with 5:55 to go in the
second quarter.
The Jaguars
would go into the break with a 19-17 lead as Nzekwe scored on a one-yard run
with 36 seconds left in the first half. The SU two-point conversion
attempt failed.
SU would go
up 33-17 in the third quarter as they scored TDs on back-to-back returns. Byron Williams scored on a 79-yard punt
return with 12:55 to go, followed by Demetric Rodgers' return of an
interception for a TD from 59-yards out with 6:36 to go in the third.
A fumble by
SU's Corry Roy would set up the Rattlers' third TD of the game, Page's third as
well, from six yards out. That
score cut the Jaguars' lead to 33-24 with 11 seconds left in the third quarter.
A John
Williams interception would set up FAMU's fourth TD of the game. Page
scored on a one-yard run with 11:09 to go in the fourth, cutting SU's lead to
33-31. Then Page would give the Rattlers a 38-33 lead with 3:27 to go in
the fourth on a two-yard run.
Marvin
Ross, intercepted a pass to seal the win for the Rattlers. He intercepted a
Dray Joseph pass with 45 second left in the game. The Rattlers donned victory formation and ran out the clock
for the win.
Eddie
Rocker finished as the Rattlers' second leading rusher with 67 yards on 16
carries.
Austin
Trainor started the game for FAMU and passed for 142 yards, completing 12
passes in 22 attempts with two interceptions. Freshman quarter Damien Fleming, finished the game for the
Rattlers as he completed six passes in eight attempts for 76 yards.
Taylor
complemented the frehman's performance, after leaving no doubt in the AFC press
conference earlier in the week, that he would be ready to insert him. "I felt like we needed some
energy. We needed a shot in the arm. As well as Fleming's throwing being
accurate, he can buy some time with his mobility. And when he's scrambling,
he's not scrambling to run. He's still looking down field. He was able to
get out and buy time and make some good "move the chains" type of plays," said
Head Football Coach Joe Taylor.
Kevin
Elliott led the Rattler receivers, with a game high 117 yards receiving on
seven receptions.
Nzekwe
finished as the Jaguars' leading rusher, as he ran for 42 yards on 14 carries
with two TDs. Joseph finished the game with 222 yards passing, completing
14 passes in 22 attempts with one TD and three interceptions.
Jamie
Payton led SU's defense with a game high 10 tackles (2 UA, 8 Asst), while
Demarius Folsom led the Rattler defense with nine tackles (5 UA, 4 Asst).
FAMU (2-2)
will return to comforts of Bragg Memorial Stadium as they will host Delaware
State in the 3rd Annual Prince Hall Shriners Diabetes Classic at 6
p.m. in Tallahassee, Fla., while Southern University (1-3) will travel to
Prairie View, Texas to take on Prairie View A&M University at Blackshear
Stadium.
