Bevel succumbs to cancer

Homegoing services for Charles Bevel will be on saturday (10-30-11) at 9 a.m. at Zarenth Path Tabernacle Church, 1028 Tenth St., Jacksonville Fl. His wake will be held Friday (10-29-11) from  5 p.m. - 8 p.m. at James Graham Mortuary 3631 Moncrief Rd Jacksonville FL.

Florida A&M Athletics lost one of its former greats. Charles "Bay Boy" Bevel passed due to a bout with cancer. Bevel was a solid fullback for coach Rudy Hubbard from 1981 -1985, missing the entire 1982 season with a knee injury.

While Bevel's stats were not off the charts, it was his lead blocking that made him a staple on the Rattler offense. In Hubbard's I-formation, Bevel paved the way for FAMU running backs such as Greg Fashaw, Frank "Choo Choo" Middleton, Gene Atkins, Archie Jones and quarterbacks Nathaniel "Billy" Koonce and Michael Kelly.

Bevel was one of the five FAMU football players coach Rudy Hubbard dubbed "The Furious Five." Gary Shipman, Willie Harper, Derrick McCray, Zach Richards and Bevel earned that name for missing curfew in Baton Rouge, as the Rattlers were preparing to face Southern University. Hubbard sat the players, which he said resulted in the loss. The players used that monicker as energy to fuel their efforts the rest of the season. Each of the five players proudly maintain their nickname with pride to this day.

The Jacksonville Raines product was not only a good blocker, but an exceptional runner with deceiving speed for his size. Bevel was an all-around athlete who also played baseball for Melvin Gilliam at FAMU. He was a wise young man that everyone looked to as a brother.

As arrangements are made, we will update them here. In addition, you can see dedications to Bevel on Facebook in a group called FAMU Rattler Footballers. Several former football players and coaches are a part of the group and exchange information in the forum.
