ORMOND BEACH, Fla. ( May 11) - The Florida A&M Softball team played their second extra innings game of the 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament as the Lady Rattlers scored three runs in the top of the tenth inning, to defeat Norfolk State, 7-4, here Friday afternoon at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
FAMU finished the contest with a game-high ten hits as the Lady Rattlers stole eight bases with both Tenisha Dixon and Jasmin Donaldson finishing with two stolen bases each, while Norfolk State tallied seven hits in the contest.
The Lady Rattlers were led by Dixon as she collected three hits in five at-bats, scoring three runs, whereas both Kathy Cortez and Gipsy Ramirez finished with two hits each to lead the Spartans.
Jennifer Lindsey(14-8) picked up her second win of the MEAC Tourney as she gave up seven hits, two earned runs and struck out ten in 10 innings of work, while Liz Riley (11-15) received the loss for Norfolk State, allowing seven hits, three earned runs and striking out two in the six innings of relief.
FAMU picked up their first run of the game as Christina Robbs scored on an Alyssa Weaver sacrifice fly to right field, giving the Lady Rattlers a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Rattlers added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning as Kieifi Myrick scored on a Tera Gainer single to the left side, followed by an Addie Dozier two-RBI single scoring both Gainer and Dixon, giving FAMU a 4-0 lead.
NSU cut the Lady Rattlers lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning as Melina Valles singled to center field scoring both Gipsy Ramirez and Haley Ward.
The Spartans would tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh as Whitney Holland would single through to the left side scoring both Wards and Cortez.
FAMU would take the lead in the top of the tenth inning as Venica Brown would pick up the RBI on a bases loaded walk, scoring Dixon. Genesis Lopez would single to right field scoring both Robbs and Obie Roberson, for the 7-4 win.
The Lady Rattlers raise their record to 26-28 as they will face Savannah State in a 3 p.m., loser bracket game. SSU defeated North Carolina A&T defeated, 7-4 in their 10 a.m., elimination game. Norfolk State finishes the season with a 24-25 record.
