Lady Rattlers Score Big At Tom Jones Memorial Meet

GAINESVILLE, FL (Apr. 20) – The Florida A&M women’s track team got in several top 10 finishes on Saturday at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational Track Meet at Percy Beard Field on the campus of the University of Florida.

In a meet that featured Olympian sprinter Justin Gatlin, who blazed to a first place finish in the 100m dash in 10.06, the Lady Rattlers fared well in the international field of professional and amateurs.  Statistics for the professional and unattached athletes were purged from the story.

Dynasty Jones continued her excellence on the track, taking the 400m dash in 55.15.  Teammate RaTeema Stanley also fared well,  running 57.74 to finish sixth.

Propelling the Lady Rattlers was thrower Sasha-Ann Lebert.  Lebert won the shot put with a heave of 13.92m, and finished second in the discus throw with a toss of 49.47m.  Javelin thrower Jaymee Smith tossed 30.50m, which was good for fifth place.

The 4x100m relay team of Jones, Nakia Linson, Jasmine Smith and Ashley Ivey took the second spot at 45.64, just edging out the home team UF Gators.  Linson would also take third in the 100m dash in 11.74, with teammate Jasmine Smith taking sixth in 11.88 and Richena Louis finished 11th in 12.27. 

Ivey would take third place in the triple jump with a 12.35m leap, while Linson took fifth in the long jump in 5.76m.  Stephanie Colter placed fourth in the high jump clearing 1.51m. 

Simone Durden, who coach Darlene Moore has trained to run the 400m hurdles, finished 11th overall in 1:05.00.

Linson, who had an active day, placed fifth in the 200m dash.  Her time of 24.00 was her fastest this season.  Jasmine Smith (24.14) placed seventh, Jones (24.48) placed eighth and Louis (25.66) placed 13th.

Chandelic Jackson ran 2:13.39 in the 800m run, finishing seventh, while Ariel Allen ran 2:16.66, which placed her 11th

Distance runners Effiey Kosgei, Cynthia Chelelgo and Zenia George paced the team.  Kosgei places second in the 3000m steeplechase (11:21.17), and 22nd in the 1500m run (5:06.06).  Chelelgo took fourth place in the 3000m run (10:47.53), and 23rd in the 1500m run )5:09.68).  George finished fifth in the 3000m steeplechase (11:53.35), and 25th in the 1500m run (5:13.34).  Ciera Williams finished eighth in the 3,000m run (11:31.05) and 27th in the 1500m run (5:15.59).

The Lady Rattlers will take next week off, in preparation for the May 3-5, MEAC Outdoor Track Championship in Greensboro, N.C.
