GREENSBORO, N.C. (May 4) -The Florida A&M Baseball team records back-to-back wins for the first time on the season as the Rattlers swept North Carolina A&T with FAMU winning game one, 3-1 and game two 4-3 in extra innings, here Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader.
FAMU (7-40, 6-17 MEAC) finished game one with seven hits as
Michael Birdsong led the team in hits with two, while N.C. A& T (14-34, 7-15 MEAC) garnered five hits with Brandon Wilkerson finishing with two of them.
David Duncan (3-7) got the win for the Rattlers as he went the distance, allowing five hits and striking out two in the nine innings on the mound. Brent Moore received the loss for N.C. A&T as he also went the distance, allowing seven hits, one earned run and striking out six in nine innings of work.
FAMU broke the 0-0 tie in the top of the fourth inning as
Kelvin Singletary scored on a Birdsong single to left center field, giving the Rattlers a 1-0 lead.
Both Birdsong and
Jared Walker added to the FAMU lead as they scored on a
Reginald Grant single to right field, giving the Rattlers a 3-0 lead over the Aggies in the top of the seventh inning.
The Aggies plated a run in the bottom of the eighth as Mark Nales hits into a double play scoring Dairio Little, cutting FAMU's lead to 3-1.
In game two, FAMU tallied seven hits, while N.C. A&T tallied eight hits.
The Rattlers were paced by
Bennie Robinson, who finished with a game high three hits. Both Luke Tendler and Jeovanny Tolentino finished with two hits each for the Aggies.
Stephen Dollar (1-2) got the win for FAMU in game two as he pitched two and two-third scoreless innings in relief, allowing one walk and striking out four. Josh Ganus received the loss for N.C. A&T as he pitched eight innings, allowing seven hits, three earned runs and striking out four in the 31 batters he faced.
The Aggies grabbed the early 2-0 lead as Tendler, who tripled to right field to lead off the inning, scored on Jeovanny Tolentino's bunt single, followed by a Cameron Jergens single scoring Tolentino, in the bottom of the first inning.
FAMU plated three runs in the top of the second inning as both
Sylvester Peck and Kendall Weeks scored on a Walker single to left field, followed by a Gibbs single scoring Walker, giving the Rattlers a 3-2 lead.
A&T knotted the game at 3-3 as James Harris scored on a Kelvin Freeman ground out to the third baseman, in the bottom of the fifth inning.
In the extra frame, FAMU scored first on a Robinson single scoring Grant to give the Rattlers a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth inning, for the finale.
FAMU will return to action on Sunday, May 5 in their final MEAC game of the year against North Carolina A&T at War Memorial Stadium in a 1 p.m. start.
