Ernie Mills comes to the Rattler squad as the receivers’ coach. Mills was a standout receiver for the Florida Gators before being drafted in 1991 to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played in Pittsburgh with Holmes until 1996. In 1997 he played one season with the Carolina Panthers, before playing with the Dallas Cowboys in 1998 and 1999.
He led the Gators in receiving touchdowns with 10 in 1990. That season he also garnered 770 yards receiving. He was a first-team All-SEC selection with the 9-2 Gators in 1990. He played under both Galen Hall and Steve Spurrier in his time at the University of Fl orida.
He helped the Steelers get a birth in Super Bowl XXX with 39 catches for 679 yards while scoring eight touchdowns on the season. Mills spent nine years in the NFL. He finished his career with 196 receptions, 20 touchdowns and 2,934 yards. He was regarded as one of the toughest receivers to ever play professional football. His versatility as a blocker was often compared to the resolve of the area’s reputation for blue collar steel workers. He was also a return man in the NFL, where he gained 1,818 on 80 kickoff returns.
Mills comes to the FAMU staff from Jacksonville University where he was the receivers’ coach and special team returner coach. Under his direction at JU, the Dolphins saw the ascension of three receivers (Nate Connor, Michael jenner, Geavon Tribble) to the 1,000 yard mark. He also coached JU returner Elliott Finkley to set school records and national recognition as a returner while there.
The mmost successful player under Mills at JU was was wide receiver Josh Philpart, now a member of the JAcksonville Sharks, champions of the Arena Football League. He finished his JU career with 35 TDs and over 2,500 receiving yards.
Mills takes over a Rattler receiving crops that has a lot of undeveloped talent. With the departure of “go-to” receiver Travis Harvey, the Rattlers will need to see the development of Lenworth Lennon as well as other young players to become reliable targets for quarterback Damien Fleming to flourish.
Mills completes the trio of former Steelers on the Rattler football coaching squad, joining Holmes and Kirkland.
He acquired his bachelor’s degree in sports and exercise science from UF in 1990.
