Release:04/09/2017

TALLAHASSEE, FL – For the second Sunday in a row Aubrey McCarty led the Rattlers to a mercy rule victory, as Florida A&M (17-14, 7-5 MEAC) pounded North Carolina A&T (16-14, 7-5 MEAC) 10-0 at Moore-Kittles Field. McCarty gave the Rattlers their first shutout of the season in a one-hit, complete game effort. The junior switch hitter also had an outstanding day at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI.

After dropping both games of the doubleheader on Saturday, Florida A&M made a statement in the early going of Game Three, scoring five runs in the first inning to take a 5-0 lead.

McCarty breezed through the top of the first, retiring the side on just six pitches. The Rattlers set the tone for the day in the home half of the inning, as they sent all nine hitters to the plate. Brian Davis and Ben Ellzey got things started with walks. McCarty then singled through the right side of the infield, scoring Davis from second for the game’s first run. Willis McDaniel drove in Ellzey from third and reached base on an error, placing runners at first and second for Dallas Oliver, who flared a single down the right field line, scoring McCarty from second. Kaycee Reese followed with another single down the right field line, scoring McDaniel, and Octavien Moyer capped things off with a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Oliver.

That would be all the run support McCarty (4-2) would need as he surrendered only one hit and allowed just five base runners through seven innings to pick up his fourth win of the year.

McCarty drove in his second run of the day in the bottom of the second inning after he laced and RBI double down the right field line, scoring Davis, who had walked, all the way from first base, pushing the FAMU lead to 6-0.

Florida A&M scored two, two-out runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-0 advantage. Russell Rauh worked a full count walk and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Ty Russ then smoked his first double of the year over the left fielder’s head, scoring Rauh from third. Davis then reached on an infield single and Russ came around to score on a throwing error by the NCAT second baseman.

FAMU scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh to end the game by mercy rule. McCarty led off with his second double of the day on a fly ball that the center fielder lost in the sun. McDaniel advanced McCarty to third on a sacrifice bunt, and Oliver drove him in with an RBI single to right, making the score 9-0. Reese added his second hit on a ground ball up the middle, and Rauh worked his second walk of the afternoon to load the bases with two outs for Ty Russ, who ended the game with a walk off single on a chopper over the pitcher’s head, scoring Oliver from third for a final of 10-0.

The Rattlers got the bats going again in this one, recording 11 hits on the afternoon. Five different players enjoyed multi-hit performances: Ty Russ (2-for-5, 2B, R, 2 RBI), Brian Davis (2-for-2, 2 R, 2 BB), Aubrey McCarty (3-for-4, 2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI), Dallas Oliver (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI), and Kaycee Reese (2-for-4, RBI).

North Carolina A&T starting pitcher Kaeson Wilson (3-3) suffered the loss after allowing six runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks in just 1.2 innings.

Florida A&M will return to action on Tuesday, April 11 at the University of North Florida at 5:00 PM before hosting MEAC Southern Division rival Bethune-Cookman on Friday, April 14 at 5:00 PM and a doubleheader on Saturday, April 15 beginning at 1:00 PM.
