Tallahassee, Fl. (March 7th, 2018) – Coming off a tough eleven inning loss, the Rattlers came into the game looking to split their series with Florida Gulf Coast University.
Gage Morey was the first base runner for the Eagles, reaching on a one-out walk. Morey advanced to second on a wild pitch and then advanced to third on a single to right by Kohl Gilmore. Richie Garcia drove in Morey with a sacrifice fly to left field before the side was retired, giving FGCU a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the first.
Jay Hayes led off the second inning with a single for FGCU, and would then score on a homerun to left field by Eric Gonzalez, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the second.
The Rattlers answered with a big second inning, started by a Jacky Miles walk, followed by a one-out double down the left field line by Willis McDaniel. Miles scored on a ground out to shortstop by Octavien Moyer. McDaniel would then score on a single to center field by Kaycee Reese. Reese then scored on a single by Jordan Curtis. John Capra added another run, driving in Bret Maxwell on a single to left field. Dallas Oliver drove in the final run of the inning with a single that scored Jordan Curtis, making it a 5-3 game after two innings.
Florida Gulf Coast shortened the Rattlers’ lead in the top of the third, thanks to a solo homerun to left center by Richie Garcia.
They would tack on six more runs in the top of the fourth. The scoring began with a two-run homerun by Kohl Gilmore. Jay Hayes doubled to left field to drive in Eli Lovell and Richie Garcia, who both reached on base hits. Hayes later scored on a passed ball, followed by a walk issued to Alex Brait. Brait scored on a Christian Proffitt single up the middle before the inning was over, making the Eagles’ lead 10-5.
FAMU dipped into the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Dallas Oliver led off the inning with a single to right field and advanced to second base on interference by the first baseman. Willis McDaniel then singled to the right side to drive in Oliver, making it a 10-6 game.
FGCU quickly got the run back in the sixth thanks to a Kohl Gilmore single to right that scored Mark Coffers, who led off the inning with a double down the left field line.
Eric Gonzalez hit his second homerun of the day in the top of the seventh to drive in Alex Brait. Christian Proffitt was then hit by a pitch and advanced to second base on a passed ball. Proffitt advanced to third on a ground ball to third base by Marc Coffers, and scored on a throwing error, making it a 14-6 game in favor of Florida Gulf Coast.
Florida Gulf Coast was not done scoring, adding one more run in the top of the ninth thanks to an Eric Gonzalez triple and an RBI groundout by Marc Coffers. The Eagles held on to win by a final score of 15-7.
Trey Vickery got the win for the Eagles, throwing 3.1 innings, giving up 1 earned run. FGCU starting pitcher Peyton Gray lasted 3.1 innings, and Parker Hamilton threw the final 2.1 innings of the game for the Eagles.
Josh Barr got the loss for Florida A&M after throwing 3.1 innings of relief. Barr replaced starting pitcher Josh Wilson in the fourth inning. Deven Shulstad threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, and Jamie Grant threw the ninth.
Florida A&M opens up Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play this Saturday at 1:00, at Moore-Kittles Field, where they will host Bethune-Cookman University.
