Cary, N.C (Mar. 23) - The FAMU Women's Softball team opened up conference play by defending their 2017 MEAC championship with a 4-1 win against North Carolina Central.
Senior starting pitcher Veronica Burse (4-11) settled in after giving up a run and two hits in the first inning by only allowing two additional hits over the final six innings. North Carolina Central senior Courtney Mirabella doubled to right field and later scored on a passed ball. Eagles sophomore Ava Dolan would double before Burse struck out Aleyah Evans and Kaitlyn Macon grounded out to first base to retire the side.
Mackenzie Woodard doubled to right centerfield in the fourth inning and drove in Shakayla Nixon. Woodard would score later in the inning on a fielding error putting the Rattlers ahead 2-1. They would never trail again.
Preseason All-MEAC selections Toni Anderson and Jamesia Stoudemire both added solo home runs in the fifth and seventh inning to put FAMU ahead 4-1.
WHAT'S ON DECK: FAMU (8-20, 1-0 MEAC) and North Carolina Central (6-13 Overall, 0-1 MEAC) and will finish up their three-game set with a doubleheader beginning at 9 A.M. Saturday, March 24th. The game was moved due to inclement weather being forecasted on Sunday.
