TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Sept. 8) – The FAMU Women’s Volleyball team dropped two Saturday matches in the Seminole Invitational Tournament, falling 3-0 to Florida State in the finale, after dropping a 3-1 morning decision to Virginia Commonwealth (VCU) at the Al Lawson Center.
The Rattler Women (0-11) pushed the Seminoles (4-4) hard in the opening set, leading 15-10 early on, before unforced errors led to FSU rallying to a 25-22 win.
FSU kept the Rattlers at bay in the second and third sets, winning 25-16 and 25-15 to sweep the match, 3-0.
FAMU’s Maria Yvett Garcia, who was named to the Seminole Invitational All-Tournament Team, led the Rattlers with 13 kills, giving her 47 kills in the three matches against Southern Miss, VCU and FSU.
In Saturday’s earlier bout, FAMU won the opening set of their morning match with Virginia Commonwealth, before falling 3-1 to the Rams at the Al Lawson Center.
FAMU won that back-and-forth opening set, 27-25 and was primed to capture the second set and possibly their first match of the season, but errors and fatigue set in, as they faded to a 25-23 setback in the second stanza.
VCU (3-6) prevailed in the final two sets, 25-17 and 25-15 to win the match.
Junior Maria Yvett Garcia led FAMU with 25 kills, followed by Aybuke Kocabiyek with 11. Valentina Carrasco had 34 digs for FAMU, while Ilayda Nurkan dished out 39 assists.
Vicky Giommarini led VCU with 12 kills, with Tori Baldwin and Gina Tuzzolo adding nine kills each.
