Royal's Layup Lifts FAMU Women Past Miami, 57-56

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Dec. 16) – Dy'Manee Royal's layup with six seconds left lifted the FAMU Women's Basketball team (2-6) past visiting Miami University of Ohio, 57-56 at The Al Lawson Center Sunday afternoon.

Royal, a junior forward from Savannah, Ga., finished the game with a double-double, scoring 16 points on 8-of-10 floor shooting, while pulling down 13 rebounds.

With the game tied at 42-42 heading into the fourth quarter, Royal took charge, scoring 12 of FAMU's final 15 points, including the Rattlers' last six points, while pulling down four rebounds in the period.

Royal scored six points early in the period, but Miami surged ahead, 52-47 with 4:52 left on a Savannah Kluesner layup, setting the stage for her to reel in the Redbirds.

Her layup with 1:34 left cut the Miami lead to 56-53, then her jumper with 11 seconds left made it a one-point game at 56-55.

A Miami turnover gave FAMU the ball and Royal banked in the clincher with six seconds left.

FAMU freshman guard Mya Moye added 15 points, splashing a trio of three-pointers, while graduate transfer guard Candice Williams finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Rattlers Sunday.

The Rattler Defense was solid on Sunday, holding Miami to 30.8 percent floor shooting on the day, while FAMU shot 41.4 percent from the floor on the afternoon.

Trailing 16-11 after the first period, held the Redhawks to 23 percent shooting in the second stanza, while shooting 43.8 percent from the floor, splashing a trio of three-pointers to outscore the visitors, 19-12, and take a 30-28 lead into the lockeroom at the half.

Miami edged FAMU, 14-12 in the third period as both clubs shot under 40 percent, forcing a 42-42 tie after three quarters.

Kendall McCoy led Miami (7-2) with 16 points and six rebounds, followed by Savannah Kluesner and Nia Clark with 14 points apiece. Kluesner led the Redhawks with seven rebounds.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR FAMU: The Rattlers travel to Deland, Florida for play in the Stetson University Holiday Tournament, Thursday and Friday. Thursday, FAMU tangles with host Stetson at 1:00 p.m., then faces off against Western Michigan on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
