GULF SHORES, Ala. (Feb. 10) - The FAMU Women's Softball team closed out their play in the 2019 Sand Dollar Collegiate Softball Classic here Sunday with a pair of tough decisions, a 10-2 morning loss to Auburn, followed by a 4-3 early afternoon setback at the hands of Tennessee State.
@ Sunday morning against Auburn, Tyra Bowers' two-run single in the bottom of the third scored Shakayla Nixon and Kaylin Rhone, putting FAMU on the board after they fell behind, 4-0 after two innings.
The Tigers (3-2) scored a run in the top of the sixth to grab an eight-run lead, with the game ending in the bottom of the inning.
FAMU finished Sunday's first game with six hits, led again by Shakayla Nixon with two hits, followed by Bowers, Alexis Day, Taylor Rosier and Alexis Blasingane with one hit each.
LeeAnn Hayes (02) got the pitching decision for FAMU, working all six innings, allowing 10 runs on 11 hits, with six walks and one strikout.
@ Against Tennessee State (1-4), FAMU logged six hits, with Day, Rosier, Blasingane, Nixon, Hera Varmah and Jamari Ridley each recording singles. Ridley and Blasingane each had an RBI for the Rattlers, who, who led 1-0 after two innings until TSU pushed across three runs in the top of fourth for a 3-1 lead.
FAMU scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, before TSU tallied their final run in the top of the fifth for a 4-2 edge. FAMU scored a run in the bottom of the sixth for the final count.
LeeAnn Hayes (0-3) went the distance, working seven innings, allowing four runs on 10 hits, with a pair of strikeouts against five walks.
ON DECK: FAMU (0-5) will be off until Wednesday, Feb. 20, when they open their home schedule against Troy (Ala.) Univrersity in a single game beginning at 5 p.m. at the Lady Rattler Softball Complex.
