NEW ORLEANS, La. (Feb. 15) – The FAMU Baseball Team opened its 2019 season here Friday avening with a 6-3 setback to Southern University-Baton Rouge played at the New Orleans Major League Baseball Youth Academy.
Southern scored single runs in the first, second, and third innings to take a 3-0 lead, before the Rattlers close to within a run at 3-2 in the top of the fourth, on Jared Weber's two-run single to center, scoring Willis McDaniel and Octavien Moyer.
The Jaguars answered in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs to build a 6-2 advantage headed into late innings.
Octavien Moyer blasted a solo home run to left in the top of the eighth for the game's final run.
McDaniel led with two hits, a double and a run scored, followed by Moyer with one hit, two runs scored one homer and a run batted in, and Weber with his one hit, the two-run single in the fourth.
Josh Wilson (0-1) got the pitching decision for FAMU, allowing four runs on six hits, with one walk and four strikeouts in three and a third innings.
