PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (Oct. 25)- The FAMU Women's Volleyball team snapped a four-match losing skid here Friday evening with a hard-fought 3-2 (25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 15-10) Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over the Hawks of Maryland-Eastern Shore at the Hytche Center.
All five sets were hotly contested with the first four going down to the wire.
Then with the match tied 2-2 headed to the fifth set, FAMU rallied from a 4-2 deficit thanks to three kills in a row by Maria Yvett Garcia, with another point coming via a UMES ball handling error.
FAMU outscored UMES, 13-6 after falling behind, 4-2, to capture the set, 15-10 and the match.
The Rattlers opened the match with a pair of wins by identical 25-21 scores, positioning FAMU for a potential match sweep.
UMES however put on a surge of its' own in the next two frames, winning 25-23 and 25-22 to force the decisive fifth set.
Garcia finished the evening with a match high 17 kills plus 11 digs. Alexis Gosha added 10 kills and a team-high 15 digs, followed by Elena Dimitrova with nine kills, 21 assists and nine digs, and Alyssa Brown, who finished with eight kills.
WHAT'S NEXT: FAMU (7-16, 5-4 MEAC) travels to Dover, Delaware for a 1:00 p.m. Sunday matinee against the Delaware State Hornets in Alumni Hall.
Tuesday, FAMU will host Alabama State 6 p.m. in the Lawson Center.
