FAMU Avenges Sept. Loss, Blanks Alabama State, 3-0

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Oct. 29) – The FAMU Women's Volleyball team successfully opened a three-match home stand Tuesday night, blanking Alabama State, 3-0 (25-8, 25-23, 25-21) in a non-conference clash at the Al Lawson Center.

FAMU (8-17) avenged a 3-1 loss in September to Alabama State (11-19) on the Hornets' home floor in the season-opening MEAC/SWAC Challenge.

The Rattlers got off to a flying start, winning the opening frame, 25-8, then withstood ASU's frantic counterpunches to take the next two sets, 25-23 and 25-21.

Graduate outside Maria Yvett Garcia led the way with a match-high 19 kills and nine digs. Junior Alexis Gosha had six kills anlong nine digs.

Junior setter Ilayda Nurkan led FAMU with 21 assists, while freshman libero Nahla Muahammad led the team with 14 digs.

WHAT'S NEXT: FAMU will return to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play on Thursday in Lawson, as they host South Carolina State at 6 p.m.

The match date and time was changed from Sunday, Nov. 3 at 1:00 p.m., because S.C. State could not find hotel space in Tallahassee with two home football games.
