NORFOLK, VA (Mar. 6) – The Florida A&M Lady Rattlers, behind the tenacious rebounding of Shakerrya Morrison, defeated the SCSU Lady Bulldogs, 65-62, in the opening round of the 2017 MEAC Basketball Tournament today at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va.

A total team effort saw the Lady Rattlers take a 10-0 lead to begin the game, but a resilient SCSU team fought back to cut the lead to single digits by halftime.

Morrison, who finished with a game-high 10 rebounds, and eighjt points, helped pace the Lady Rattlers with timely plays that thwarted the Bulldogs’ efforts to overtake FAMU.

Aiding Morrison were fellow JUCO transfer guards Ecenur Yurdakul and Florence Ouattara, who scored 13 and 10 points respectively, while seniors Alicia McCray and Cedricka Sweeting each added nine points

“I thought our team stuck to our plan.  We expected SC State to come out with fire.  It’s the MEAC tournament, if you can’t bring your best here, then you aren’t serious about winning.  They (SCSU) played much tougher than they did two weeks ago when we visited Orangeburg (SC).  I applaud our young ladies for scrapping for every loose ball and making their free throws,” head coach LeDawn Gibson said.

The Lady Rattlers will face the Norfolk State Spartans, who defeated Delaware State 60-40 in the first round of the MEAC Basketball Tournament, Thursday at 2 PM in the Scope Arena.
