WIGGINS GETS 700: The FAMU Women’s Softball team handed head coach Veronica Wiggins her 700th career victory on Saturday, March 11, with an 8-1 win over Howard University in the Puerto Rico Collegiate Softball Classic at Rivera Ballpark…..Home runs from Alexis Day and Amber Fullwood keyed Saturday’s milestone victory for FAMU (5-19-1), which won two games in the tourney here in five starts….. Wiggins is in her 26th season at FAMU, making her the longest serving head coach in the school’s 100-plus year athletic history, surpassing the Hall of Fame football legend, Jake Gaither (25 seasons)…… She came into the 2017 campaign ranked 44th on the NCAA’s Career Coaching wins list for active coaches…The Miami native has led FAMU to a league-best 12 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships, tying the Rattlers for fourth in conference titles won among Division One programs, along with nine postseason season appearances, and six NCAA Regional berths.

HALL OF FAME ADDS ONE: The FAMU Sports Hall of Fame announced this week the election of former speedster Valerie Stoudemire (1996-99) to the Class of 2017… Stoudamire was a scintillating outfielder whose speed in the field and on the basepaths proved key to the Lady Rattler Softballers winning three straight MEAC championships between 1997 and 1999….. The honors graduate from Central Florida (Lake Wales) finished her career fourth all-time with a robust .359 batting average, placing first all-time in base hits (269), runs scored (184) and second in stolen bases (117)….. Stoudemire, was the consummate leadoff hitter for Coach Veronica Wiggins for four seasons, twice leading the team in batting average, hitting .377 in 1998 and .360 in 1999….She topped the club in hits with 70 in 1997, twice led in runs scored with 53 tallies in 1998 and 47 as a freshman in 1996, and three times led the team in stolen bases, with 44 in 1998; 36 in 1999; and 26 in 1997…. Stoudemire becomes the fourth FAMU Softball player to be inducted into the Hall, joining teammates Amber Alford (pitcher) and Kimberly Browning-Hankerson (third base), along with pitcher Danielle Brown.

DAY LEADS FAMU IN P.R.: Sophomore outfielder Alexis Day literally ruled the day for FAMU the Puerto Rico, hitting .400, with two doubles, a triple, a home run and eight (8) RBIs… In the extra-inning loss to Albany of New York, Day had two doubles, a triple and four RBIs.

SETTING THE PACE: Alexis Day tops the FAMU hitting charts through 25 games with a .302 batting average, holding the team lead in RBI (15) and hits (19), tied for the club lead in doubles with senior Amber Fullwood (3)…. Junior Toni Anderson is tops in home runs (4) and second in RBIs (8)… Fullwood ranks second in hits (17) and is tied for third in RBIs (5), with freshman Jamesia Stoudamire, who leads the club in runs scored (12), to go with her two doubles, two triples and two home runs…Senior pitcher Kenya Pereira (1-8, 3.68 ERA) leads the team in strikeouts (55) in a team-best 80.2 innings of work… Junior Veronica Burse (2-9) is next in innings worked (56.0) and strikeouts (24), followed by promising sophomore Tahlia Snider (2-2) with 16 Ks in 24 innings.

MEAC HONORS: The MEAC recognized three FAMU Softballers this week: Alexis Day (FAMU) went 3-for-4 at the plate with two home runs and four RBI against Albany at the Puerto Rico Tournament…. Jamesia Stoudemire (FAMU) hit one home run and stole one base in the 8-1 victory over Howard….Kenya Pereira (FAMU) scattered seven hits and struck out seven batters in a complete game against Furman…. Last week, freshman infielder Jamesia Stoudemire was named MEAC Rookie of the Week…. Stoudamire, a  5-9, Fr., Lake Wales, Fla.) went 6-for-12 at the plate in four games against Troy and Mercer. She hit two home runs in a doubleheader against Mercer. She also stole two bases and drew two walks.

WHAT’S ON DECK: The USF Under Armor Classic at Clearwater, Florida will be played Friday through Sunday, March 17 through 19… FAMU will face a quartet of snowbirds – Yale (4:00p) and Colgate (6:15p) on Friday, and Rutgers (12:00 p) and Army (2:30p) on Saturday – before closing the event Sunday against host South Florida (USF) at 4:00 p.m.
