AUSTIN, Tex. (Nov., 29) – The FAMU Men’s Basketball team dueled the Texas Longhorns valiantly for more than a half, before the home club caught fire down the stretch to pull away to an 82-58 win here at the Frank Erwin Center Wednesday night.

Wednesday’s first half saw the Rattlers (1-8) duel toe-to-toe with Texas (5-2), twice tying the score in the first five minutes thanks to jumpers by Marcus Barham and Isaiah Martin, with Desmond Williams knocking down a three-pointer with 16:02 left to give FAMU their only lead of the game at 9-8.

The Longhorns would eventually get the lead up to double digits in the first half, with their largest margin being 14, at 35-21 on an Eric Davis layup with 2:12.

A three-pointer by Barham with 1:21 left, and a layup by Martin with 37 seconds left, sliced the Texas advantage to nine points, 35-26 at halftime.

To open the second half, the Rattlers would cut the deficit to seven points, 35-28,  on an Elijah Mayes jumper with 19:09 left, and a Desmond Williams triple with 16:14 left, brought the Rattlers within nine points at 43-34.

As determined as the Rattlers were Wednesday night, they couldn’t quite offset the hot second half shooting of the Longhorns, who hit 75 percent of their floor shots (21 of 28) and 50 percent (3 of 6) from distance to eventually pull away from FAMU, which shot 47.8 percent (11 of 23) from the floor.

Leading the way for FAMU was their “Big Three,” Williams, Martin and Barham.

Desmond Williams finished with a game-high 21 points, despite foul trouble, knocking down a pair of three-pointers. Isaiah Martin turned in his third double double of the season, and his second on this 13-day road trip Wednesday, scoring 13 points to go with 11 rebounds, while Marcus Barham finished with nine points, cashing in a trio of three-pointers.

Elijah Mayes finished with seven points, Kamron Reaves added five points, and Craig Bowman had three points.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Rattlers will close out their current five-game, 13-day road swing Saturday night at Murray (Ky.) State University.
