Macon, Ga. (February 21st, 2018) - The Rattlers got off to a great start in game two of their two-game series with Mercer University, putting up three runs in the top of the first inning. After reaching on a hit by pitch, Dallas Oliver later scored on a wild pitch. John Capra then singled to drive in Brian Davis, who reached base on a single, and Octavien Moyer who reached base on a walk, making the score 3-0 FAMU going into the bottom half of the first.
The Bears answered in the bottom half thanks to two walks, a wild pitch and a Brandon Michie groundout to second base that scored Le Bassett.
FAMU added one run in the second, with Jordan Curtis scoring on a Brian Davis single after reaching base on a fielder’s choice. They would then tack on another in the third. John Capra singled and advanced to second base on a Bret Maxwell walk. Capra then advanced to third base on a Malachi Mitchell single before scoring on a Jordan Curtis sac fly to center.
Mercer would lessen the deficit by one run, with Trey Truitt reaching on a walk, and scoring on a balk after two more walks in the inning.
FAMU would quickly increase the lead back to four. Brian Davis singled in the top of the fourth and would later score on a sacrifice fly to center field by John Capra, making the score 6-2 Florida A&M.
Mercer responded with a big inning, scoring five runs in the fourth, thanks to five hits, including singles by Trey Truitt, Le Bassett, and JT Thomas, and doubles by RJ Yeager and Alex Hanson. This gave the Bears a 7-6 lead going into the fifth inning.
After both teams failed to score in the fifth and sixth innings, the Rattlers regained the lead with a three-run seventh inning. Garrett Wilkinson led off the inning with a single, followed by a John Capra single. Cameron Johnson would then follow up with a double, and Jordan Curtis also doubled to make the score 9-7.
Brian Davis led off the Rattlers’ eighth with a walk, followed by a base hit by Octavien Moyer. Davis went on to score on an RBI single by Garrett Wilkinson, and Moyer then scored on an RBI single by Jacky Miles. FAMU was not done there, as Bret Maxwell drove in another run with a single of his own, and Jordan Curtis added a run with a double to left field. The Rattlers still did not let up, tacking on two more runs on an infield hit by Dallas Oliver, making the score 15-7 heading into the bottom half.
FAMU held on to this lead to win the game by a final score of 15-7. Jamie Grant earned his first win of the season, turning in a 4-inning outing, giving up no runs and only one hit. Starter Dylan Carlson threw 2.1 innings giving up one earned run on no hits, and Jeremiah McCollum threw 1.2 innings in relief.
Zach Graveno got the loss for Mercer University, who sent a total of nine pitchers to the mound in the game.
Florida A&M will host Alcorn State this weekend for a four-game series. The first game will start at 4:00 PM on Friday, February 23rd, at Moore-Kittles Field.
