Miami, Fl. (February 27, 2018) – The Rattlers made their way down to Miami, Florida to try to get back on the winning side of things against the Panthers of Florida International University in Game one of a two game non-conference series.
The Panthers got on the board first in the second inning with a two-run homerun by Jose Garcia, driving in Lorenzo Hampton Jr., who reached base on a hit-by-pitch. They would tack on another run in the third inning. Christian Khawam led off the inning with a double, and was driven in by a Diandre Amion single.
After being held scoreless in the fourth inning, FIU added another run in the fifth inning. After reaching base on a hit-by-pitch, Austin Shenton scored on a double by Javier Valdez.
FAMU finally got on the board with two runs in the seventh inning. Jacky Miles Jr. was the first base runner in the inning, thanks to a base hit. He would then advance to third base on an error by the third baseman. Kaycee Reese then drove in Miles on a single to the right side, advancing Willis McDaniel to third base. McDaniel then scored on a wild pitch, decreasing the Panthers’ lead to 4-2.
FIU answered in the bottom half of the inning. Christian Khawam led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third base on a double by Diandre Amion. Amion would later score on a ground ball to shortstop by Jose Garcia, making it a 6-2 game. The Panthers added another run in the 8th, as Logan Allen scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a walk.
FAMU couldn’t respond in the 9th, as FIU earned the win by a final score of 7-2. Nick McDonald got his first win of the season for the Panthers, throwing 6 scoreless innings. William Saxton threw the 7th inning, giving up two unearned runs. Cody Cortelli and Chandler Raiden each threw a scoreless inning to close out the game.
Pedro de los Rios was handed his first loss, throwing 5.2 innings, giving up four earned runs and striking out two. Chris Clark closed out the sixth inning for the Rattlers before Jamie Grant entered the game to throw a scoreless seventh inning. Dylan Carlson got the eighth, giving up one unearned run on no hits.
Florida A&M will try to split the series on Wednesday, February 28th at 3:00 PM.
