TROY, Ala. (Apr. 4) – The FAMU Women’s Softball team split a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader at Troy (Ala.) University, winning the second game, 4-3, after dropping the opener, 9-1.
Dothan, Alabama native Toni Anderson was a clutch performer for FAMU Wednesday, driving in three runs on three hits in the twinbill.
Sophomore pitcher Kyaira Brown (9-9), went the distance in Game Two, scattering nine hits, striking out four against one walk. She yielded three runs to Troy in the bottom of the third, but blanked the Trojans over the final four innings.
FAMU, which took a 1-0 lead on Taylor Rosier’s RBI single (scoring Shayla Boyd), tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth on Toni Anderson’s two-run double, before taking the lead for good with a run on Rosier’s sacrifice fly to left (scoring Boyd) in the sixth.
Rosier, Boyd and Anderson each had two hits to lead FAMU in the nightcap, with Rosier and Anderson finishing with two RBI apiece.
In Game One, Troy (20-17) scored eight runs in the bottom of the second, then added a single run in the fifth to invoke the eight-run rule after five innings.
FAMU scored its’ only run of the game in the fourth, on Toni Anderson’s RBI single which plated Jamesia Stoudemire, who reached on a one-out single.
Senior pitcher Veronica Burse (5-12) worked four one third innings in the opener, allowing nine runs (five earned) on nine hits, walking four while fanning two.
WHAT’S ON DECK: FAMU (14-21) will return to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play Friday with a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader on campus against North Carolina A&T. The first game will be televised live nationally by ESPNU.
The schedule change was prompted by a forecast of inclement weather for Saturday afternoon.
There will likely be a single game played on Saturday morning. A start time will be announced on Friday.
