FAMU Scores Four In 10th To Top Savannah St., 7-4

SAVANNAH, Ga. (April 13) – The FAMU Softball team scored four runs in the top of the 10th inning to get past host Savannah State, 7-4 in opening game of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division series here Friday afternoon.

Friday’s win lifted first place FAMU to 9-1 in MEAC play, and 17-22 overall.

All the action Friday took place late, as the game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning, when, FAMU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth, when junior Alexis Day belted a solo home run, but Savannah’s Elizabeth Humes lashed a one-out, two-run double to give SSU a 2-1 lead. Shayna Byers followed that with an RBI double to extend the SSU edge to 3-1.

In the top of the seventh, FAMU’s Tyra Bowers led off with a single, then advanced to second on a wild pitch, before Jamesia Stoudemire socked a two-run homer to tie the game 3-3.

Taylor Rosier followed with a double, then Shakayla Nixon came on to pinch run for her. Toni Anderson and Alexis Day both struck out swinning, as did Kyaira Brown to end the FAMU threat.

Brown set the Lady Tigers down in order in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game to extra innings.

After a scoreless eighth and ninth, the International tie breaking rules came into play in the 10th inning, with FAMU placing a runner at second. With Bowers at second, Alexis Day singled, followed by a bunt single by Brown to score Bowers for a 4-3 lead.

Yuri Hampton laid down a bunt single, scoring Day for a 5-3 lead, then Hera Varmah’s sacrifice fly to right scored Brown from third for a 6-3 lead. Two batters later, Bowers hit and RBI double, scoring Hampton to extend FAMU’s lead to 7-3. Savannah scored a late run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th.

Brown  (12-9) won her eighth straight complete game decision, striking out six, while walking just two, allowing four runs (three earned) in 10 innings.

FAMU finished the day with 14 hits, led by Bowers and Stoudemire with three apiece, while Day, Brown and Hampton each had two hits..

WHAT’S ON DECK: FAMU and Savannah State will complete the weekend series with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader here Saturday at Lady Tiger Field.
