FAMU Drops Three Tough Matches At FIU

MIAMI, Fla. (Aug. 25) – The FAMU Women’s Volleyball team opened their 2018 campaign in the FIU Invitational Tournament at Ocean Bank Arena in Miami over the weekend, dropping three hard-fought matches to Tennessee State (3-1) and FIU (3-1) on Friday, and a Saturday bout against Stetson University (3-0).

TENNESSEE STATE 3, FAMU 1 – FRIDAY

The FAMU Women dropped a hard-fought four-set season opening match to the Tennessee State Tigers (3-1, 25-27, 23-25, 25-22, 23-25) Friday afternoon.

FAMU dropped the first two sets by two points each, 27-25 and 25-23, before rallying to win the third set, 25-22.

However the Tigers (1-1) held off the inspired FAMUans to take the fourth set and the match, 25-23.

Junior outside Maria Yvett Garcia led FAMU with 13 kills, finishing with 16 digs, followed by junior Radka Dimitrova with 10 kills, and Aybuke Kocabiyik with nine.

Senior libero Valentina Carrasco led FAMU with 25 digs, followed by Garcia’s 16, and 15 from Jessa Long. Ilayda Nurkan topped FAMU with 21 assists, followed by Elena Dimitrova with 18.

FIU 3, FAMU 1 – FRIDAY

FAMU again played valiantly in Friday’s second match against the FIU Panthers, falling 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 23-25, 16-25), winning the second set, 25-23 for a 1-1 split before dropping a heartbreaking third set, 25-23.

Junior outside Maria Yvett Garcia led FAMU with 15 kills, followed by Radka Dimitrova with 11. Aybuke Kocabiyik and Karina Pressoir each finished with seven kills.

Senior Valentia Carrasco led FAMU with 21 digs, while Elena Dimitrova added 25 assists and 12 digs.

STETSON 3, FAMU 0 – SATURDAY

On Saturday, FAMU fell 3-0 to the Stetson Hatters (19-25, 21-25, 16-25), as they could not get untracked offensively in their final match.

Kocabiyik and Pressoir led FAMU with nine (9) kills each, , followed by Yvett Garcia with eight (8) and Radka Dimitrova with seven (7).

Jessa Long (11) and Radka Dimitrova (10) led FAMU in the digs department, while Ilayda Nurkan handed out a team high 21 assists.

WHAT’S NEXT: FAMU heads to Martin, Tennessee this weekend for matches Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the UT Martin Invitational. They will face host UT Martin, along with Central Arkansas and Memphis in the event.
