TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Wednesday afternoon's contest was close for eight innings, before North Florida (31-15) scored four runs on seven hits in the top of the ninth on their way to a 9-2 win over Florida A&M (23-21) at Moore-Kittles Field. Seven of the first eight batters in the inning recorded hits for the Ospreys, allowing them to put the game out of reach.
Dylan Carlson gave the Rattlers some much needed innings and allowed key Florida A&M relievers to rest in preparation for a pivotal MEAC Southern Division Series this weekend against North Carolina Central. The freshman set a career high with 6.1 innings pitched on the afternoon, but suffered the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits.
The Ospreys took the lead in the top of the fourth on back-to-back doubles from the top of the order. Later in the inning, UNF plated their second run on a sacrifice fly, giving the Ospreys a 2-0 advantage.
The Rattlers cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth inning with one run on two hits. Kodi Russ led off with a single to left and after a successful hit-and-run by Russell Rauh FAMU had runners on the corners with no outs. Danny Rodriguez plated the first run for Florida A&M with a perfect safety squeeze, making the score 2-1, before two fly outs ended the inning.
North Florida tacked on another run after a two-out walk and a double down the right field line in the top of the sixth.
The Ospreys added single runs in the seventh and eighth before blowing the game open in the top of the ninth. A leadoff walk by Carlson came around to score on a double in the top of the seventh, and a throwing error led to an unearned run in the eighth.
Brian Davis just missed his fourth home run of the season in the home half of the eighth, and drove in the final run of the day for FAMU on an RBI double off the right field fence – scoring McDaniel, who had walked.
Adam Polansky (2-2) picked up the with for North Florida after allowing just one run on six hits in four innings.
Florida A&M will look to break their three game skid this weekend against North Carolina Central. The two clubs will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 PM and a single game on Sunday at 1:00 PM.
