SAVANNAH, GA. (Oct. 1) – The 2017 FAMU Women’s Volleyball team kept their regular season winning streak in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference games alive Sunday, with a thrilling 3-2 victory over Savannah State University at Willcox-Wiley Gym.
Sunday’s win extended FAMU’s conference win streak to 14 matches, dating back to the end of the 2015 regular season.
SSU (2-14, 0-2 MEAC), opened the match with a 6-1 run and kept up the pace in the set, going on to win the first set, 25-16.
FAMU (5-9, 2-0 MEAC), started the second set with a 7-2 lead, controlling the set throughout, winning 25-15.
Thr Rattlers started the third set with a 4-2 lead, but the Tigers closed the gap, taking the lead 20-14, before winning, 25-21.
The fourth set started with a tie score 4-4, but eventually FAMU gained control of the set, beating the Tigers, 25-10.
FAMU started the fifth set with an 8-1 run, building the lead to 10-5 until the Tigers pushed back and closed to 11-9. But the Rattlers regained control to win the final set, 15-12.
Top performers for FAMU were, Maria Yvett Garcia, with 17 kills and five digs, followed by Candelaria Herrera, with15 kills and two aces.
Radka Dimitrova added eight kills and seven digs. Ilayda Nurkan dished out 43 assists for FAMU, while Valentina Carrasco led with 22 digs.
FAMU’s next match will be Friday, Oct 6 at Bethune-Cookman University, staring at 7 p.m.
