YPSILANTI, Mich. (Nov. 10) – The FAMU Women’s Basketball team opened their 2017-18 schedule here Friday afternoon with an 83-61 setback to Eastern Michigan at the EMU Convocation Center.
Junior guard Florence Ouattara led FAMU with 19 points, seven rebounds and five steals Friday. Junior center Shalunda Burney-Robinson added 10 points and five rebounds, while senior forward Shakeyrra Morrison pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for the Rattlers, to go with eight points and three assists. Freshman Zhymani Smith also added eight points and three assists.
FAMU trailed, 22-11 after the opening stanza, but made it closer in the second, as EMU nipped them, 17-14 on the scoreboard, to grab a 39-25 halftime lead.
The Rattlers hopes for a second half rally faded a bit, as the Eagles, outscored FAMU, 29-16 in the third period to take a 63-48 lead into the final quarter, where outscored EMU, 18-15.
FAMU shot 33.8 percent from the floor for the game (23 of 68), versus 50 percent floor shooting (31 of 62) for the Eagles.
Courtnie Lewis led the Eagles (1-0) with 18 points Friday.
WHAT’S NEXT: FAMU will continue their pre-Thanksgiving road tour Wednesday, as they open a three-game Midwest swing Wednesday morning (11:00 a.m. Central) at Texas Tech in Lubbock. The Rattlers will then head north to Kansas State for a 5:30 p.m. Central bout on Friday, before winding down the swing at Nebraska Omaha on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Central….. FAMU opens their home schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 22 at 12 noon against Sacred Heart in the Al Lawson Center.
