Jacksonville, Fl. (April 3rd, 2018) – Coming off a weekend series sweep, Florida A&M looked to stay hot as they hit the road on Tuesday to take on the Dolphins of Jacksonville University in a single mid-week non-conference matchup.
The Dolphins struck first in this one, scoring in the first inning. Chris Lehane scored on a bases loaded error by the third baseman. Jacob Southern then drove in John Cassala with a single to left, but Jordan Curtis threw out Sam Armstrong at home to end the inning and keep it a 2-0 game after one inning of play.
Florida A&M cut the lead in half with one run in the top of the third inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Jacky Miles hit a sacrifice fly in foul territory to score Bret Maxwell to make it a 2-1 game going into the bottom of the third.
Both teams were held scoreless for the rest of the game, as Jacksonville would hold on to win by a final score of 2-1. Spencer Stockton earned the win for the Dolphins, going 4 innings of scoreless relief. Starting pitcher Austin Temple threw 3 innings, allowing one run. Trent Palmer added a scoreless inning of relief before Chris Mauloni came in to the game in the ninth to earn the save.
Florida A&M starter Jeremiah McCollum suffered his first loss of the season after giving up two runs (none earned) through three innings of work. Hunter Fillingim threw a scoreless fourth, while Josh Barr added 1.1 scoreless innings. Chandellor Benton closed the sixth and recorded an out in the seventh before giving way to Jamie Grant, who finished the seventh. Dylan Carlson tossed a scoreless frame in the eighth.
The loss drops FAMU to 14-18 on the season. The Rattlers will look to stay hot in MEAC play this weekend, as they visit the Aggies of North Carolina A&T for a three-game set, starting with a 1:00 PM double header this Friday, April 6th.
