Long ball dooms FAMU in loss to NC A&T

Greensboro, N.C. (May 7th, 2018) – After winning their weekend series at NC Central, FAMU traveled to Greensboro, N.C. to make up a previously postponed game with the Aggies of NC A&T.

              FAMU jumped on top in the top of the first as Jacky Miles drove in John Capra with a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Rattlers an early 1-0 lead.

              NC A&T gained the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Adan Ordonez drove in AJ Hunt with a single through the right side. Dawnoven Smith then scored from third on a wild pitch to make it a 2-1 game in favor of the Aggies.

              Myles Sowell then hit a solo homerun to left field to extend the NC A&T lead to 3-1 after 4 innings of play.

              The Rattlers shortened the deficit in the top of the sixth as Bret Maxwell singled to left, driving in Willis McDaniel to make it a 3-2 game.

              The Aggies extended the lead to 6-2 in the seventh thanks to a Dawnoven Smith homerun to right that scored AJ Hunt and Greg White.

              An eighth inning grand slam by Dawnoven Smith scored Forest Kimbrell, Greg White and Justin Williams to make the NC A&T lead 10-2 after eight innings of play.

              NC A&T would hold on to win by a final score of 10-2. Walfrank Pineiro earned the win for the Aggies, allowing one earned run in 1.1 innings of relief. Starting pitcher Jonah Owenby allowed one run (none earned) through 4 innings of work and Josh Bottenfield recorded the last two outs of the sixth. Leon Hunter tossed a scoreless seventh and Jason Jenkins threw a scoreless ninth. 

              FAMU starting pitcher Josh Barr suffered the loss (3-2), allowing three runs (two earned) through 5.1 innings of work. Chandellor Benton recorded the last two outs of the sixth and the first out of the seventh before giving way to Jamie Grant. Hunter Fillingim and Josh Wilson would then combine to throw the ninth.

              The loss brings Florida A&M to a 23-26 record on the year (14-7 MEAC). The Rattlers will host the Aggies of North Carolina A&T for their last weekend series of the regular season, starting with a 1:00 PM double header this Friday, May 11th, at Moore-Kittles Field.
