TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Sept. 7) – The FAMU Women’s Volleyball team opened their 2018 home schedule Friday evening in the Al Lawson Center, dropping a tough three-set decision to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, 3-0 (13-25, 18-25, 19-25).
Sophomore Aybuke Kocabiyik led FAMU (0-9) with 10 kills, followed by juniors Maria Yvett Garcia and Radka Dimitrova with five kills each.
Karina Pressoir finished with four kills, while Kalen Blathers had three. Ilayda Nurkan dished out 17 assists for FAMU, which got 11 digs from Valentina Carrasco and five digs from Jessa Long.
Southern Miss (6-2) was paced by Kylie Grande with 13 kills and Alexis Coombs with nine.
Friday’s action, was part of the opening day of play in the annual FAMU-FSU Volleyball Invitational, which resumes Saturday with two 11:30 a.m. matches, FAMU vs. VCU in Lawson, and Florida State vs. USM at Tully Gym.
The tourney closes Saturday afternoon at Lawson, with a 4:00 bout between VCU and USM, followed by the 7:00 p.m. cross town clash between FAMU and FSU.
