MIAMI, FLA. (Dec. 28) – The Florida A&M Lady Rattlers couldn’t match the size and inside dominance of the No. 24 Miami Hurricanes and went down 103-54 in the opening game of the Miami Holiday Classic.
Freshman Mya Moye, the reigning MEAC Co-Rookie of the Week, led FAMU with 18 points on 6-of-15 shooting, including 3-of-7 from three-point range. Candic Williams went 6-of-26 from the field, contributing 13 points. They would be the only FAMU players in double figures.
Head coach LeDawn Gibson felt the game was a learning experience. “What I learned today is that we’ve assembled a team that will fight until all the time runs off the clock. Down the line, that attitude will help when things get tough. We won’t face this type of physical mismatch again this season, but there were times when our smallest player was fighting their tallest player for a rebound. That determination is why I feel confident that this team can do well in conference play,” Gibson said.
Four of Miami’s starting five scored in double figures. Emese Hof led all scorers with 22, Kelsey Marshall and Beatrice Mompremier each scored 17 and Laura Cornelius scored 11. Jamir Houston scored 10 points off the bench.
The story of the game was points in the paint. Um scored 50 points in the paint, while FAMU scored 20. The inside advantage also contributed to 25 second chance points for Miami, while the Rattlers mustered just six.
FAMU shot 20-59 (33.9%) from the field and just 10-17 (58.8%) from the free throw line. UM shot 36-37 (53.7%) from the field and 22-32 (68.8%) from the free throw line. Miami nearly doubled the number of shots taken by FAMU.
“We’ll look back at the game and determine where we can improve. It is always disappointing to lose, but I have to give Miami credit for being a legitimate ACC contender. We have Tulane on Sunday and the goal is to play a better team game overall. At this point it is countdown to conference play. This will be our last opportunity to see what we have in our mixture of new and returning players before we hit the MEAC,” Gibson said.
The Rattlers will face the Tulane Green Wave Sunday at 2:00 PM in the last day of the Miami Holiday Classic.
