CARRABELLE, Fla. (Apr. 7) – The fresh Florida Sunshine took center stage at the St. James Bay Golf Course in Carrabelle, Fla., as nine team vied for the 2019 FAMU Spring Invitational Championship.  Florida A&M got off to a hot start, taking the lead after 18 holes.  But, the maroon and gold Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman would ride a scorching final round to the title.  B-CU scored a final round 288, to edge the Rattler for the win by six strokes.

The Rattlers would follow their solid performance on day one with a 301, which ballooned their opening 290. The Rattlers would take second place in the inaugural FAMU Spring Invitational at St. James Bay Golf Club.

“Everyone one I talked to had a good time this weekend.  This course, the housing arrangements, the delicious food and the southern hospitality make this a great place for our event.  We’ve got teams asking for the date of our tournament next year already.  That lets us know we picked the right venue,” FAMU head coach Mike Rice said.

The remaining places in the tournament were very close in scoring.  Savannah State took third, Miles College took fourth and Hampton placed fifth.  In order, Alabama A&M, Maryland Eastern Shore, North Carolina Central and Paine College rounded out the placements.

FAMU’s Ethan Mangum played solid rounds of 66 and 70 to win medalist honors for the tournament.  His two-day total of 136 bested B-CU’s Marcus Sundolf’s 143, followed closely by B-CU’s Jake Lane at 145.

Paul San was Alabama A&M’s top scorer, placing fourth with identical scores of 73, for a 146 total. Samuel Bradley paced the NCCU Eagles with a two-day 149 total.  Zach Otto led SSU with a 151.  The remaining team scoring leaders were Blair Water (MDES, 151), Arriek Douglas (HU, 153), Chandler Holcomb (Miles, 157) and Stephen St. Clair (Paine, 160).
