Rattler Women Drop 60-58 Heartbreaker At Norfolk

NORFOLK, Va. (Jan. 7) - The FAMU Women's Basketball team saw its' furious fourth quarter rally come up just short in a heartbreaking 60-58 loss to Norfolk State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Echols Hall Monday evening.

FAMU (2-12, 0-2 MEAC) got off to a slow start, shooting 15 percent from the floor in the opening quarter, trailing 14-6 after one, and 32-18 at halftime.

The Rattlers flipped the script in the second half, outscoring the Spartans (7-8, 2-0), 21-20 in the third period to close to 13 points, 52-39, then outpaced NSU, 19-6 in the final frame.

Dy'Manee Royal's bucket with 35 seconds left, pulled FAMU within one point, 59-58, but a crucial turnover denied the Rattlers another shot. Norfolk's Dana Echols hit the first of two free throws with one second left for the final margin, 60-58.

MEAC Rookie of the Week, freshman guard Mya Moye led FAMU with 13 points, followed by Royal with a double double, 12 points, 11 rebounds. Deja Antoine added eight points and six rebounds, while Candice Williams and Keziah Dilworth both finished with six points.

Kendrea Dawkins led all scorers with 20 points for Norfolk State.aven Russell with 14 points and eight rebounds.

WHAT'S NEXT: FAMU will  host Savannah State at the Lawson Center this Saturday at 2:00 p.m., opening a three-game home stretch in MEAC play.
