ORANGEBURG, S.C. (Sept. 29) – The 2017 FAMU Women’s Volleyball team opened their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference schedule on the right foot Friday night, beating South Carolina State, 3-0 at Dukes Gymnasium.
FAMU (4-9, 1-0 MEAC), opened the match with a 10-5 run and never looked back, winning the first set, 25-11.
The Bulldogs (1-13, 0-1 MEAC) started the second set with a 5-1 lead, but FAMU rallied to tie the score at 14-14, fighting point for point, before winning the set, 25-22.
FAMU started the third set with a 7-1 run, building the lead to 18-11.
But the Bulldogs eventually closed the gap to19-16, before FAMU went on to win the final set, 25-19.
Top performers for FAMU were, Nicole Abreu, with 12 kills and eight digs, followed by Maria Yvett Garcia, with eight kills, three digs, and one ace.
Candelaria Herrera and Aybure Kocabiyik each finished with seven kills. Elena Dimitrova dished out 38 assists for FAMU, while Valentina Carrasco led with ten digs.
FAMU’s next match will be Sunday, Oct 1st at Savannah State University, starting at 1 p.m.
