TALLAHASSEE, Fla. | The Florida A&M University baseball team was honored by Tallahassee Mayor John E. Dailey during a proclamation presentation at the Tallahassee City Hall on Wednesday afternoon.

“A better FAMU makes a better Tallahassee,” Florida A&M head baseball coach Jamey Shouppe said. “We just appreciate Mayor Dailey and the Commissioners on what they do for Tallahassee and their service to the community. We were excited for the opportunity to be here and hopefully we can return very soon.”

Florida A&M celebrated the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament Championship on May 18 as the Rattlers needed two wins over Norfolk State to claim the school’s eighth conference championship.

FAMU entered the day needing to beat Norfolk State twice to capture the title. The Rattlers were down by five runs against the Spartans and down to the final pitch before rallying to earn the 5-4 victory. In the winner-take-all championship game, Florida A&M rolled to the 8-1 victory to claim the title.

With the championship victory, the Rattlers earned the MEAC’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division I Baseball Regional Tournament as Florida A&M lost to No. 3 Georgia Tech and Coastal Carolina to end the season.

“It’s a goal,” Shouppe said. “Every year it’s a goal to get to the NCAA Regional Tournament. You have to have goals, you have to work to reach those goals, sacrifice to reach those goals and our team certainly did that this year. I am certainly proud of these young men, not just how they did this past baseball season, but how they grew as men.

“To overcome the obstacles of how we started (0-6 start) and salvage a good season, and to win the MEAC Tournament, and to the NCAA Regional Tournament for only the second time in school history, that is quite an accomplishment. That is something these guys will always remember and I’m just so proud of them and today was a great way to commemorate that.”

The Rattlers will open the 2020 season at home on Monday, Feb. 17 against South Florida, followed by back-to-back home games on Feb. 18 and Feb. 19 against Mercer.
