Rattlers Split With Tigers In MEAC Action

SAVANNAH, GA. (April 21) - The Florida A&M Rattlers baseball team snapped their seven-game losing streak as they defeated Savannah State, 8-3 in game two of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader.

In game one, the Tigers blanked the Rattlers, 6-0.

FAMU finished game one with four hits as the Rattlers had four batters to finish with one hit each.

SSU pounded out 11 hits in the first contest as the Tigers had three players to finish with two hits each to lead the Tigers.

Kyle McGowin picked up the win as he struck out 15 batters and allowed four hits in nine innings of work, while John Roberts received the loss as he pitched four and one-third innings, giving up six hits, two earned runs and striking out three.

SSU would go up 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning as Chris Arnold singled to left field scoring Julius Green.

The Tigers would plate two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning as Barry Truitt, who was hit-by-pitch in his at-bat, scored on a Darien Campbell triple. Campbell scored on a Todd Hagen single, giving SSU to a 3-0 lead.

SSU would score three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 6-0 finale.

 

Rattlers ignite in game two.


In game two, FAMU would finished the contest with a game-high ten hits as Khiry Hernandez finished three-for-four from the plate, with an inside the park homerun.  Daniel Lee recorded two hits in one triple and one double.

SSU (14-25, 6-8 MEAC) finished with five hits, with Julius Green finishing with two-for-three from the plate to lead the Tigers.

Heath Blackburn picked up the win for the Rattlers as he went five and two-third innings, giving up four hits, one earned run and striking out four in the 28 batters he faced. Tommy Freeman received the loss for the Tigers as he gave up six hits, six earned runs and striking out four in five innings of work.

FAMU(7-37, 5-12 MEAC) would grab an early 3-0 lead in the top of the second innings as Khiry Hernandez hit his first collegiate three-run inside the park homerun.

The Tigers would cut the Rattlers' lead to 3-2 as both Peter Poole and Mathew Oglesby scored on a FAMU error in the bottom of the third inning.  SSU would tie the game at 3-3 as Joseph McCrary scored on a Julius Green double in the bottom of the third inning.

FAMU would regain the lead in the top of the fourth inning as Tyler Lawson tripled to left field scoring both Jaylin Earl and Hernandez, giving the Rattlers a 5-3 lead.

Daniel Lee, who tripled to right field in his at-bat, adding to FAMU's lead in the top of the fifth inning as he scored on an Andrew Thomas sacrifice fly to centerfield, making the score 6-3 in favor of the Rattlers.

Lee, who doubled in his at-bat, scored his second run of the game on a Ryan Sheplak single.  Sheplak would score on a Hernandez single, giving the Rattlers an 8-3 lead in the top of the seventh inning, for the 8-3 win.

FAMU will conclude their three-game series with Savannah State on Sunday, April 22 at Tiger Field in a 1 p.m. start.
