DAVIDSON,NC - (Sept.17) FAMU running back/kick returner James Owens was selected as the week 3 National All-Purpose Performer of the Week, announced today by executive director Brad Smith of the College Football Performance Awards. Owens, led the Rattlers to a 44-20 home-opener victory over visiting conference foe Hampton University.

He scored three touchdowns, gaining 161 yards on 11 carries. He also had 117 return yards, along with his receiving yards, brought his all-purpose total to 282 yards.

Owens, who is just returning to full strength after a minor hamstring diversion, made the play of the game on a 57-yard scamper, outracing the entire Pirate defense for the score.  He hurdled a Hampton defender to score on another touchdown.

The 5'8", 180 lb junior is from Apopka,Fl, where he attended Wekiva High School and is a redshirt junior.

Owens was also selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's (MEAC) Football Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Julien David of Howard was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Zack Cimaglia of N.C. A&T was selected as the Rookie of the Week. Douglas Almendares of Florida A&M and Rodney Tyson of Howard were named Offensive Lineman and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively.

Owens (RB, 5-9, 180, r-Jr., Apopka, Fla.) carried the ball 11 times for 157 yards rushing with three touchdowns to lead the Rattlers to its first win of the season with 44-20 victory over Hampton.

David (DB, 5-11, 195, Jr., Coral Springs, Fla.) recorded six total tackles, five solo, in Howard's overtime win over Norfolk State. He also tallied a breakup, forced a fumble, and blocked the potential game-tying PAT in overtime to preserve the victory.

Cimaglia (K, 5-10, 140, Fr., Charlotte, N.C.) made four field goals, including three from 40 or more yards out (40, 41, 42 and 27) in the Aggies 40-7 win over Virginia University of Lynchburg. He also recorded three touchbacks on kickoffs.

Almendares (OC, 6-3, 310, Jr., Miami, Fla.) graded out at 93-percent of his assignments as he aided the Rattlers to 489 yards of total offense en route to its first conference victory of the season. He also tallied four pancake blocks.

Tyson (KR, 5-9, 165, So., Evans, Ga.) returned three kickoffs for 156 yards, including a 100-yard return for a touchdown, to lead Howard to a 37-36 overtime win against Norfolk State.

Other Top Performances


Olusegun Ayanbiola (DSU) tallied four solo tackles with one for a loss of seven yards in the Hornets' loss to Cincinnati. He also forced two fumbles, recovering one, with one pass breakup in the 23-7 defeat.

Travis Champion (HAM) connected on 28-of-53 passes for 347 yards with two touchdowns in Hampton's loss to Florida A&M.

Antwon Chisholm (HAM) recorded six kickoff returns for 122 yards in Hampton's loss to Florida A&M.

Nico Flores (NSU) completed 30-of-48 passes for 387 yards with four touchdowns against Howard. He also rushed for 36 yards on 10 carries in the loss.

Earvin Gonzalez (MSU) connected on 2-of-3 field goals from 40 and 43 yards out against Akron.

Terrance Hackney (B-CU) aided the Wildcats to 355 yards of total offense and graded out at 80-percent of his assignments in the contest.

Brandon Hepburn (FAMU) recorded 10 tackles, six solo, with four pass breakups in the Rattlers' win over Hampton.


Lewis Kindle (NCAT) posted 217 yards passing on 16-of-27 attempts including a long of 34 yards in the Aggies victory over Virginia University of Lynchburg.

Dawud Lane (B-CU) recorded five tackles, three solo, with one for a loss of two yards along with two QB hurries against Miami.

Terrence Leffall (HOW) rushed 31 times for 122 yards to help Howard defeat Norfolk State, 37-36, in overtime.

Joshua Matthews (HOW) graded out at 98-percent on all assignments and helped the Bison rush for a season-high 222 yards in Howard's win over Norfolk State. He also collected three pancake blocks.

Twarn Mixson (HAM) led the Pirates' receiving corps with five catches for 100 yards in Hampton's loss to Florida A&M.

Nail Muradymov (DSU) registered one pancake block and graded out at 90-percent as he aided DSU to 261 yards of total offense.

Oleg Parent (NCCU) scored five points, accounting for a 33-yard field goal and two extra point kicks, against Duke.

Makari Pugh (NCAT) collected seven tackles, four solo, with 4.5 for a loss of 11 yards. He also forced a fumble in the victory over Virginia University of Lynchburg.

Jordan Reid (NCCU) completed 17-of-26 passes for 218 yards against Duke.

William Robinson (NCAT) graded out at 88-percent as he aided the Aggies with 298 yards of total offense. He also recorded eight pancake blocks in the win.

Ryan Smith (NCCU) collected five tackles, two solo, including one for loss of two yards, and two pass break-ups against Duke.

DeShaun Summer (MSU) collected a game-high 11 tackles with one for a loss and a pass breakup against Akron.

Malcolm Williams (DSU) rushed for 120 yards on 20 carries with one touchdown in the Hornets' loss to Cincinnati.

Tyriqe Williams (NCCU) topped the Eagles defensive efforts with 11 tackles, two solo, versus Duke.
