GREENSBORO, NC (May 6) - Last year, the FAMU Rattlers men's track team finished ninth in the MEAC Outdoor Track Championship. Head coach Wayne Angel vowed at that time that the team would not be that low again. His words came to light as the Rattlers finished fitth in the 2012 MEAC Outdoor Championship, held at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.

Riding the strength of his distance runners, Angel's team pulled off two upsets. With the Norfolk State men's team dominating the conference in distance events, the Rattlers attacked that area and came away with two huge scores.

Freshman Elias Chesire, Angel's prize recruit, took first place in the 5000m run. Senior Shuaib Winters would match that with a win in the 3000m steeplechase. While the natural talent of these athletes was critical in the wins, the strategy Angel implemented was just as important.  Chesire was named the meet's Co-Outstanding Runner.

"We've seen Norfolk run over the last two years, and we understood their strategies. To counter that, we prepared to combat that strategy with our own and emerged victorious today," Angel said.

Chesire and Winters were both named to the All-MEAC first team, along with teammate Steve Emere, who took first place in the triple jump at 15.89m (52.01.75). Emere's leap was nearly three feet farther than the nearest competitor.

Elias Chesire was named MEAC Co-Outstanding Runner
