FAMU Sweeps B-CU On The Diamond For MEAC Opener

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 10) - The Florida A&M Baseball scored in their last at bat in both games to defeat the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, 3-2 in game one and 5-4 in game two in their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference home opener, here Saturday afternoon at Moore-Kittles Field.

It has been 14 seasons, since the Rattler swept the Wildcats in a doubleheader. The Last time FAMU swept B-CU was on April 10, 1999 as the Rattlers won game one 5-2 and game two 4-1.

In game one, FAMU (3-12, 2-0 MEAC) finished with a game-high 11 hits as Tyler Lawson, Jarryd Reid, and Scott Sheplak finished with two hits each to lead the Rattlers.

B-CU (5-9, 0-2 MEAC) finished the game with four hits as Alejandro Sanchez led the Wildcats from the plate as he tallied two hits in four at-bats.

Tony Covington (2-1) got the win for the Rattlers as he pitched two-thirds innings in relief striking out one, while Jordan Dailey (1-3) received the loss for the Wildcats as he also pitched two-thirds innings in relief, allowing one earned runs and striking out 1.

B-CU grabbed a 2-0 lead the top of the first as David Lee singled to right field scoring Alejandro Sanchez, who doubled in his at bat, followed by a Nick Johnson single scoring Lee.

FAMU cut B-CU's lead to 2-1 in their half of the first as Reid scored on a Justin Abney double .

Then the Rattlers would tie the game at 2-2 as Sheplak scored on a Daniel Lee single up the middle in the bottom of the second inning.

The Rattlers would then pull out the 3-2 victory as Corey Franklin scored on a Reid single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth inning.

In game two, it also come to the Rattlers' final at bat.

FAMU finished the game with a 10 hits, while B-CU tallied eight.

The Rattlers were led by Daniel Lee as he went a perfect three-for-three from the plate, while both Anthony Stokes and Jordan Taylor finished with two hits each for the Wildcats.

Covington received the win for FAMU in game two as he pitched one and one-third innings in relief, allowing one hit and striking out one, while Dailey received the loss for B-CU, giving up three this, one earned run and striking out two in two-third innings of work.

Lee scored the Rattlers' first run of the game on a Franklin single. Then Justin Abney would score on a Wildcat passed ball, giving FAMU 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third innig

B-CU cut the FAMU's lead to 2-1 in top of the fourth as Lenny Martinez scored on a FAMU infielder's error.

The Wildcats would then take a 4-2 lead as they plated three runs in the top of the fifth inning as Stokes scored on a Brandon Turner single, followed by a Martinez single scoring Brashad Johnson. Turner scored on a Jake Welch fielder's choice.

FAMU would tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning as Sheplak scored on a Lee single. Lee would score on a John Scott single.

Lee would be the hero for the Rattlers in game two as he singled down the right field line scoring Sheplak, giving FAMU the 5-4 win.

FAMU will return to action on Sunday, March 11 as they will conclude their three-game series with Bethune-Cookman in a 1 p.m. start at Moore-Kittles field.
