On a weekend where the flag was raised in centerfield to commemorate the succes of National Baseball Hall of Famer Andre Dawson, the Rattlers' play was far from that excellence.
Heath Blackburn pitched a game where he got no help from the Rattler defense. For the second consecutive week, a ball hit to the gap in the outfield, resulted in an in-the-park homerun. Blackburn went four and two-thirds innings allowing 13 hits, seven runs, six earned runs, struck out one and walked two.
A visibly frustrated Willie Brown managed to settle the Rattlers back into the game and make a run at the Eagles. After several defensive changes and a focus on offense, the Rattlers crawled back into the game, before succumbing to the Eagles' potent offense.
The Eagles had hot bats, as they have all weekend, garnering 16 hits on the day and totalling 35 runs scored in the weekend series. Luis Diaz, who hit the inside the park homerun, continued his feasting on Rattler pitching, gathering seven hits for the three-game series.
The Eagles got on the board in the first inning as Diaz scored, after being walked, and came around on a Carter Williamson RBI single. NCCU got another run from Troy Marrow on a Ross Plummer RBI single to end the top of the first with two scores. It was a lead that they would never relinquish.
The Rattlers were led at the plate by Khiry Hernandez, Jarryd Reid and Reginald Grant collected two hits each. Diaz, Marrow and Tyson Simpson all got three hits in the game for NCCU.
The Rattlers went the first three innings without a score. Hernandez scored the first run for the Rattlers in the bottom of the fourth, as Jarryd Reid tripled to right field, garnering the RBI. The Rattlers would get one run in the bottom of the fifth as Dylan West reached on a single. Reginald Grant would get a sacrifice fly to bring him in. The Rattlers would score two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, getting the Rattlers to within a 7-4 score, which is as close as they would get.
Thomas Barwick came on in relief for the Rattlers for the final out of the fifth inning and finished the game. Barwick allowed only three hits, allowing two runs, struck out two and walked one.
Ruben Rios got the win for the Eagles, going six innnings, allowing eight hits, four runs and two earned runs. Jacob Russell got the save for NCCU, going three innings, allowing two hits, one run and no walks.
The Eagles continued to score, gathering two more runs in the top of the eighth and hled the lead going into the bottom of the ninth with a 9-5 lead over the Rattlers, the resulting final score.
