Several Rattlers Stand Out In 2012 FAMU Relays

TALLAHASSEE, FL (Mar.10) - The Florida A&M Rattlers performed well at the 62nd Annual Webster Surgical Center FAMU Relays at the Robert "Pete" Griffin Track Complex. The Rattlers had several top 10 performances which included some MEAC qualifiers.

This year marked the third year that the meet has honored grand marshalls. This year's honorees were members of the 1972 men's 4x100m relay team that was ranked No.2 in the nation. All four members of the team was present. Joseph Ramsey, Kenneth Thomspon, Calvin Henderson and Rey Robinson were honored at the meet's opening ceremonies for winning the 1972 SIAC 4x100m relay championship.

Dual sport star Jeremy Tillman took the 100m dash in 10.52. Tillman, who also plays on the Rattler football team, edged out Niko Richey, who finished second in 10.65, for a one-two punch. Charief Lewis would place fifth in a time of 10.84.

Senior middle distance specialist Lamere Buchanon took first place in the 800m run, edging Grambling State's Darwin Price in a time of 1:55.63. Price would run a 1:56.30, followed closely by McDaniel Olivier's 1:57.63, finishing third.

Xavier Mackey took top honors in the shot put.  He threw the shot 13.33m (43-09.00) to take first place.  Mackey would follow that with a second place finish in the discus throw at 38.53m (126.05).

In the javelin throw, three Rattlers finished in the Top 10.  Tillman took second place with 45.52m (149.04), while Charief Lewis took third (43.54/142-10), and Jean Leon took eighth with 39.96m (131-01).  Leon would also take sixth in the long jump at6.54m (21-05.50).

Freshman distance runner Elias Chesire won the 1500m run in a time of 4:00.98.

Derrick Morgan cruised to a second place finish in the 400m run in a time of 48.58.

All three of FAMU's relay teams took second place behind the Grambling State Tigers. In the 4x100m relay, Lewis, Phillips, Richey and Elijah owens took second with a time of 40.61. In the 4x400m relay, the Rattlers squad of Buchanon, Morgan, Charief Lewis and D'Anthony Lewis carded a 3:14.62 to edge the Tennessee State Tigers. Finally, in the 4x800m relay, the team of Buchanon, Olivier, Dieumy Duclos and Owolabi Deji came in at 8:02.29.

Individually, Elijah Owens took sixth place in the 110m hurdles. He raced to a time of 15.39. Phillip Washington took ninth place in a time of 15.66, while Nyalls Carlton took 10th place in 15.89. In the 400m hurdles, Carlton took ninth place with a score of 58.89.

The Rattlers will next compete on March 22 at the FSU Relays at Mike Long Track.
