FAMU's Keelyn Fleming was named to the MEAC Cross Country All-Academic team.  Fleming is a junior distance runner from Pensacola, Fla.  She came to FAMU from Pensacola High School.

Coach Darlene Moore is very proud of Fleming's academic honor.  "We stress the importance of a good education to our young ladies all the time.  What Keelyn accomplished is excellent, considering the time she spent training as well.  We are very proud of her, because she truly represents one of FAMU's brightest," Moore said.

FAMU director of athletics Derek Horne was pleased with the news as well.  "This is what we strive for.  From the time they get on campus at FAMU, we make sure our student-athletes' mentality is that they are here to get an education.  Playing sports is just the vehicle to achieve that goal," Horne said.

The MEAC announced the 2011 Men's and Women's Cross Country All-Academic honorees on Nov.3, recognizing 81 student-athletes, from the conference's 13 member institutions who achieved academic success during the 2010-11 school year. The MEAC recognizes student-athletes with a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average, including sophomores to seniors, as well as transfer student-athletes, who have been in residence at the institution for at least one year.

"I applaud the Men's and Women's Cross Country student-athletes who have maintained a 3.0 or better grade point average during the 2010-11 academic school year," said Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas. "In addition to recognizing the student-athletes achievements, I also commend the athletic academic support staff and personnel, coaching staffs and all persons who contributed to the academic success of these student-athletes."
