Softballers Close Regular Season In Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (May 7) – The FAMU Women's Softball team closed out the 2017 regular season schedule with a two-game set in the University of Florida Tournament, dropping games to No. 1 ranked Florida, 7-0 on Sunday, and North Texas, 6-2, on Saturday.

@ In Sunday's bout against the top-ranked Gators, FAMU had just two hits – by Amber Fullwood and Whitney Farris – in the game.

Starting pitcher Veronica Burse (4-16) worked four innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits in four innings, with two strikeouts. Kenya Pereira came on to work the final three shutout innings, scattering three hits with four strikeouts.

Florida (50-5) scored three runs in the second and one run in the third, closing the scoring with three runs in the fifth.

@ In Saturday's game against North Texas, Kenya Pereira (8-10) took the loss in the circle, striking our two in three and one-third innings, allowing one run on three hits. Tahlia Snider came on in the second in relief, allowing five runs on five hits in two and two-thirds, before Pereira returned to finish the game.

FAMU trailed 1-0 after the first, but tied the score in the top of the third on Jamesia Stoudemire's RBI double, which scored pinch runner Trinity Alexander, subbing for Miesha McBride, who reached on a single.

UNT (25-29) scored two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead, before FAMU closed to within one run, 3-2 in the fourth, on Toni Anderson's solo home run, her 11th of the year.

The Mean Green closed out the scoring in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run rally for the final 6-2 count.

Stoudemire, McBride, Anderson and Alexis Day had the four FAMU hits in Saturday's game.

WHAT'S  ON DECK: The 2017 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament begins Thursday in Ormond Beach, Florida at the Sports Complex. FAMU (18-29-1), which won the Southern Division, will be the number one Southern seed and will play one of the two 1:00 p.m. games. Pairings will be announced Monday.
