ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (May 11) – Defending champion Florida A&M advanced to the semifinals of the 2017 MEAC Softball Tournament with a pair of shutout decisions, 6-0 over Coppin State and 3-0 over North Carolina A&T Thursday at the Ormond Beach (Fla.) Sports Complex.
FAMU (20-29-1) will face off Friday against arch rival Bethune-Cookman, a 2-0 winner over Hampton, in the 1:00 p.m. Winner's bracket final. The winner advances to Saturday's 1:00 p.m. Title game.
In Game One Thursday, senior pitcher Kenya Pereira (9-10) allowed just two hits while striking out six in seven innings for her 11th career MEAC Tournament win.
Freshman Jamesia Stoudemire and senior Tashayla Irvis each had two hits and scored two runs, while sophomore Alexis Day drove in three runs with a fifth inning triple.
In Thursday's Game Two, FAMU scored the game's first run on an RBI single by Amber Fullwood, scoring Jamesia Stoudemire. FAMU made it 2-0 in the fifth when Stoudemire doubled to score Whitney Farris, then FAMU added the final run in the sixth, when Fullwood singled home Tahlia Snider.
Fullwood led FAMU with two hits and two RBI, with Stoudemire driving in a run, while picking up two hits along with Tashayla Irvis. Junior pitcher Veronica Burse (5-10) tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits.
