FAMU To Face Florida Gators In NCAA Opener

The FAMU Rattlers will open play in the 2017 NCAA Softball Tournament Friday against #1 University of Florida, Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium in Gainesville, Florida.

@ This will be the eighth (8th) NCAA regional appearance for FAMU dating back to 1999, and their fourth NCAA set in Gainesville... Overall, this NCAA appearance marks the 11th postseason trip for FAMU since 1995 - the first three being play-in series (1995, 1997, 1998).

@ This will be the third appearance in Gainesville this season for FAMU (23-30-1), which is coming off a victorious Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament win - their fourth straight, and 13th all-time since 1993.

@ FAMU lost their two previous games against Florida, 8-1 (Feb. 17) and 7-0 (May 7)... The Rattlers are 0-2 against another Gainesville Regional contestant, FIU, who they played twice in the Florida Invitational in February, dropping both games, 12-1 and 8-0.

@ FAMU's opening round game Friday, will be preceded by a 12 Noon clash between FIU (45-13) and Oklahoma State (35-23).

  MORE FAMU SOFTBALL NOTES:

@ FAMU extended its' league-leading total of MEAC Softball titles to 13 this past weekend, and won four straight pennants for the first time in school history.

@ The 2017 FAMU Senior Class – pitcher Kenya Pereira, third baseman Amber Fullwood, outfielder Whitney Farris, catchers Miesha McBride and Denise Anderson, and outfielder Tashayla Irvis - are the first senior class at FAMU to win the MEAC title all four years…..

@ Head coach Veronica Wiggins, was named MEAC Coach of the Year for the fifth time in her 26 seasons, and earned Outstanding Tournament Coach for the 11th time on Sunday.. She reached two coaching milestones this season, getting her 700th career win March 11 against Howard University…

   She also won her 250th career conference victory following a three-game sweep of South Carolina State (April 1-2)…. Wiggins comes to Gainesville with a 718-819 career mark overall, and a 257-89 conference standard…. 

@ During the April series against South Carolina State saw a bit of national player history too, as sisters Denise and Toni Anderson hit home runs in the seventh inning of Game One, becoming just the eighth (8th) pair of siblings to “go yard” in the same inning in college softball history…. Anderson's 12 home runs puts her fifth on the single season list passing slugging third baseman Kim Browning (1999)….

@ Along with Coach Wiggins receiving MEAC honors, were five members of the 2017 FAMU team: pitcher Kenya Pereira, first baseman Toni Anderson, third baseman Amber Fullwood and outfielder Alexis Day were first team selections, while freshman shortstop Jamesia Stoudemire was voted to the second team.
