GAINESVILLE, Fla (May 19) – Florida A&M gave up a seven run third inning that dashed the hopes of the Lady Rattlers getting past the top-seeded Gators. Florida would go on to score nine runs to end the game in the middle of the fifth, advancing in the winner's bracket, today in front of a crowd of 1,151 at Katie Seashole Pressly Softball Stadium.
Weather was the name of the game early, as lightning in the area caused a two-hour delay in the start of the game. At one point, per NCAA rules, the stadium was evacuated because of the proximity of the lightning.
Pitcher Kenya Pereira was the only FAMU player to reach base, on a walk, as Delanie Gourley (19-4), no-hit the Rattlers who just were not able to get a solid lick on the softball. Pereira took the loss on the mound, as the Gators scored the nine runs on nine hits.
UF lead-off hitter Amanda Lorenz and Jenell Wheaton each carded a pair of hits to lead the Gators, which resulted in two RBI each as well. Five other players cored one hit each.
The Florida win was aided by seven walks, as Pereira and Veronica Burse were not able to find the sweet spot across the plate.
FAMU will give it another go as they will face the FIU Panthers at 2:30PM in in the loser's bracket game for an opportunity to advance in the NCAA Regional.
