TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Feb. 20) - The FAMU Women's Softball team (3-6) will open their 2018 home schedule Wednesday afternoon with 4:00 p.m. doubleheader against Mercer University at the FAMU Softball Complex.
Wednesday's games will be preceeded by a special outfield Wall unveiling honoring the four-time defending MEAC champion Lady Rattlers.
FAMU is coming off a 2-3 showing in the UCF Invitational Tournament in Orlando this past weekend getting a 6-5 win over Quinnipiac in Friday’s opener.
They lost a 12-2 decision later Friday to George Washington, then FAMU lost two nailbiters on Saturday, 1-0 to Hofstra and 2-1 to host UCF, before closing the tournament with a 2-1 win over Texas Tech on Sunday.
FAMU's 2018 squad has a boatload of new faces, who are already making an impact, a group which included JUCO transfer Tyra Bowers, the club leading in hits (10), stolen bases (5), and average (.370); Mackenzie Woodard (.357), Shakayla Nixon (.333), Lauren Williams (.308), Hera Varmah (.267, 1 HR, 4 RBIs), and Taylor Rosier (.250, 1 double, 3 RBI).
Returning veterans to watch will include the Preseason All-MEAC trio of shortstop Jamesia Stoudemire, first baseman Toni Anderson and outfielder Alexis Day.
The pitching circle has been sharp so far led by senior Veronica Burse (2-4, 3.53 ERA, 16 strikeouts in 33.2 innings) and newcomer Kyaira Brown (1-2, 5.01 ERA, nine strikeouts in 22.1 innings.
