TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (April 8) – The FAMU Women’s Softball team scored three first inning runs Sunday morning which proved to be enough as they clinched the MEAC series from visiting North Carolina A&T, 4-2 at the FAMU Softball Complex.
FAMU (16-22, 8-1 MEAC South Division) maintained at least a two game division lead with Sunday’s win, while A&T (7-27, 4-5 MEAC) held onto the third spot in the division behind Bethune-Cookman.
In the first inning, Jamesia Stoudemire’s RBI triple, scored Tyra Bowers with the game’s first run. Taylor Rosier followed with an RBI single to plate Stoudemire for a 2-0 lead, then later in the inning, Yurie Hampton drew a bases loaded walk ro score Rosier for a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Aggies used a hit and a FAMU error to score a run in the top of the fourth, but an RBI double by Rosier in the bottom of the sixth got the run back for FAMU, scoring Stoudemire for a 4-1 edge.
A&T scored the game’s final run in the top of the seventh, as Nathly Pacheco scored on an RBI double by Stephanie Williams.
FAMU’s Kyaira Brown (11-9) won her third game of the week Sunday, striking out five against one walk, in seven complete innings, scattering four hits while allowing two runs.
Stoudemire and Rosier had two hits each to lead FAMU, with Rosier driving in a pair of runs, and Stoudemire another.
Sunday’s win kept FAMU’s hopes of back-to-back Southern Division titles alive with six games left. The Rattlers split a Friday twinbill, winning the nationally-televised opener, 9-2, before dropping a 6-2 decision in the nightcap.
WHAT’S ON DECK: FAMU is at Jacksonville for a single midweek game Wednesday (5:00), then return to MEAC play next weekend at Savannah State Saturday (1:00 doubleheader) and Sunday (12 Noon single game).
