ORMOND BEACH, Fla (May 11) – The Florida A&M Softball team  broke a one-all tie with two runs in the top of the fifth on their way to a  6-1 victory over North Carolina Central, in the elimination final of the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Championships Friday evening at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.

Saturday’s final round will pit FAMU against rival Bethune-Cookman, with the Lady Rattlers needing to win two games from the Wildcats to claim their fifth straight MEAC title, a feat they managed in last year’s tournament.

FAMU 6, NCCU 1

Pitcher Kyaira Brown (16-11) went the distance in the elimination bout, holding NCCU (20-26) to one unearned run on three hits in seven innings, striking out four against no walks.

The Lady Rattlers finished the second game with 13 hits, sparked by Brown, who had a team-high three hits along with two RBI. Toni Anderson and Alexis Day each had two hits.

FAMU closed out the scoring in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs for the 6-1 final.

Bethune-Cookman 7, FAMU 3

FAMU (23-28) lost earlier on Friday in the winner’s bracket final to archrival Bethune-Cookman, 7-3, never recovering after allowing four runs in the first inning..

Jamesia Stoudemire was the spark plug for the Rattlers, going 3-for-4, with her first hit breaking the FAMU scoring drought with a third inning solo home run to left-center field. She would add two singles to her hitting total.

Veronica Burse started on the mound for the Rattlers. It was a rocky start as she gave up four earned runs in the first inning. Kyaira Brown came in to stabilize the Rattler defense, getting the Rattlers out of the first inning and completing the game on the mound. She would relinquish three earned runs in the Rattlers’ loss.

Alexis Bermidez got the win for B-CU, going the full seven innings. She gave up eight hits and two earned runs. Kayla Traylor led the Wildcats at the plate scoring two runs while collecting two hits.

The Lady Rattlers will return to action in the loser’s bracket at 5:00 P.M. as they will face the winner of the North Carolina Central University versus Hampton University elimination game.
