ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (May 12) – The Florida A&M Softball team had its’ dreams of a fifth straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title dashed here Saturday afternoon, as they dropped a hard-fought 8-5 decision to archrival Bethune-Cookman in the title game of the 2018 MEAC Softball Tournament at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
FAMU (23-29) fell behind 5-0 after four innings, but dug deep to rally to within one run, at 5-4, with a four-run top of the sixth inning.
Pitcher Kyaira Brown’s RBI single scored Shakayla Nixon for a 5-1 score. Yuri Hampton’s sacridice fly to center, drove on Alexis Day for a 5-2 count, before Brown scored on a throwing error after a pitching change for a 5-3 game. Another Wildcat error allowed Hera Varmah to score from third for the 5-4 count.
But the FAMU hopes went by the boards in the bottom of the sixth, when Bethune-Cookman first baseman Iesha Waters hit a three-run homer to give the Wildcats some insurance at 8-4.
FAMU pushed across one final tally in the top of the seventh, on Varmah’s RBI single to center, which scored Alexis Day.
The Rattler Women finished the game with six hits, led by Brown with two hits and an RBI. Yurie Hampton and Varmah also drove in a run each, with Varmah, Day, Toni Anderson and Tyra Bowers each getting a hit in Saturday’s game.
Brown (16-12) went the distance for FAMU in the circle, allowing eight runs on 10 hits in six innings, striking out two and walking two.
FAMU ALL-STARS: Kyaira Brown, Hera Varmah and Toni Anderson were named to the MEAC Softball All-Tournament Team…. Junior pitcher Kyaira Brown, and junior outfielder Tyra Bowers were second team All-MEAC selections, while junior utility player Taylor Rosier was a third team selection.
