GULF SHORES, Ala. (Feb. 8) - The FAMU Women's Softball Team dropped a tough pair of games Saturday in the 2019 Sand Dollar Softball Classic at Gulf Shores, Ala.
FAMU (0-3) dropped the opening game, 4-3 to Western Kentucky, before falling to Missouri State, 7-4 in the second game of the day.
@ Against Western, FAMU finished with three hits, coming from Kimiya Watkins, Alexis Day and Shakayla Nixon. Nixon had two RBIs, with Day driving in the other run. Watkins, Day and Taylor Rosier each scored a run.
FAMU led 2-1 in the top of second, scoring two runs to take the lead, then added a single tally in the top of the third for a 3-1 lead, beforre the Hilltoppers plated three runs in the bottom of the third.
LeeAnn Hayes (0-1) got the decision for FAMU, allowing four runs on three hits with a strikeout and three walks in three innings. Camryn Fixico came on in relief in the fourth allowing just one hit over the final three innings, with one walk.
@ Against Missouri State, the Rattlers struck for eight hits, led by the trio of Tyra Bowers, Rosier and Hera Varmah with two hits apiece. Bowers had a double, while Kimiya Watkins had an RBI triple, and Varmah collected an RBI as well.
FAMU scored a pair of runs in the top of the second to cut the State lead to 3-2, before tying the game at 4-4 in the top of the fifth with another two-run outbreak. State answered with a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good.
Junior Camryn Fixico (0-2) got the decision for FAMU, allowing nine hits and seven runs in six innings of work, with four strikeouts against two walks Saturday.
ON DECK: FAMU will close out the Sand Dollar Sunday at 10 a.m. Central against Auburn, and 1:00 p.m. CST against Tennessee State.
